Upper Macungie Township
Upper Macungie Township is a Second Class Township governed by a Board of Supervisors which is elected at large by the qualified voters of the Township. The Board of Supervisors, elected for terms of six years each, serve both legislative and executive functions. Their responsibilities include: caring for roads and bridges, establishing commissions and authorities, and making building and zoning regulations. The Township Treasurer, appointed by the Board of Supervisors, is in charge of all township monies. Day-to-day operations of the township are carried out by full-time employees. The Public Works Department maintains approximately 110 miles of roads.
As of the census2 of 2000, there were 13,895 people, 5,128 households, and 3,835 families residing in the township. The population density was 204.5/km² (529.5/mi²). There were 5,335 housing units at an average density of 78.5/km² (203.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the township was 92.96% White, 1.18% African American, 0.04% Native American, 4.23% Asian, 0.59% from other races, and 1.00% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.69% of the population.
There were 5,128 households out of which 37.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.0% were married couples living together, 6.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.2% were non-families. 20.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.08.
In the township the population was spread out with 26.5% under the age of 18, 4.7% from 18 to 24, 30.8% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 92.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.9 males.
The median income for a household in the township was $65,062, and the median income for a family was $74,299. Males had a median income of $52,971 versus $33,490 for females. The per capita income for the township was $28,801. About 2.0% of families and 3.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1.8% of those under age 18 and 9.0% of those age 65 or over.
South Whitehall Township is best known as the home of Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom, a popular area amusement park.
The Township is served by the Parkland School District.
